UXalliance is an international network of leading User Experience (UX) companies. We help global organizations create better international products and services by providing them with local research, knowledge and design.

Our alliance is made up of professionals from different countries, industries and specialties. In this opportunity we introduce Ketut Sulistyawati, founder and director of Somia Customer Experience and co-founder of Farmacare.id, Indonesia.

In this interview we ask Sulis (as she is commonly called) to tell us about her academic journey, her specific experiences and her immersion in the UX universe.

How did you start your journey in the UX universe? What sparked your interest?

For the final project of my degree, I developed an e-learning software to help students learn about Rapid Prototyping. It was during this development that a friend suggested that I consider the usability of the software and suggested that I attend a Human Factors course to learn more about it.

This piqued my interest, so I took his advice and attended. Thanks to the course, I learned the importance of understanding humans from a physical, cognitive and behavioral perspective when designing a solution.

I found that by approaching a solution with all of these factors in mind, many meaningful answers are found as to why something is designed a certain way, rather than being guided solely by aesthetics.

After graduating, I continued studying for a PhD in Human Factors. Three years later, I started my professional career as a UX Designer in a multinational company.

How did you get involved in UXalliance? What benefits do you get from an international alliance?

A few years later I founded Somia Customer Experience, my consulting firm, and started working on some projects with other UXalliance partners.

Thanks to this collaboration, one of the partners recommended me to join UXalliance. I immediately started the process as I saw that being part of an international alliance has many advantages, from getting project opportunities, new friends and connections, to learning the best practices of the other partners.

Can you explain what UX-PM Certification is?

The UX-PM Certification is an international training program delivered by UXalliance’s most experienced UX professionals. The goal is to empower our colleagues to achieve business results by adopting a human-centered design approach.

This training program is sponsored by UXalliance, and the UX-PM Certification is offered in 19 countries.

Why do you think it is relevant for a person to become UX-PM certified?

It is important to learn the fundamentals of theory and mindset, not just the tools.

Technology and trends will change, but with a solid understanding of UX fundamentals, you can apply what you learn in different situations and contexts.

How do you see the future of UX in the business world?

UX will no longer be limited to specific jobs or the UX department. Everyone in the company will be expected to have the UX mindset and apply it to their daily work.

In fact, this is not the future, it is the present, it is already happening and it will only continue to expand.
